Having been used as the town’s local recycling depot for several years and falling back into disrepair after a minor rehabilitation project in the 1990s, R. Edwards & Co. was hired by the Town of Danville (VT) in 2022 to oversee a comprehensive rehabilitation of this under-utilized community landmark which sits prominently on the popular Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. This project sought to preserve the station’s historic character while transforming it into a vibrant community destination for residents and trail users. Design efforts focused on retaining and restoring significant historic features, including the station’s original passenger waiting room, shellac-finished beadboard paneling, wood trim, and overall historic form and massing. Later non-historic alterations were carefully removed, allowing important interior spaces to be returned to their historic appearance and proportions. A key component of the rehabilitation included the reconstruction of the station’s historic train platform and canopy based on historic documentation, reestablishing one of the building’s most recognizable architectural features. The project also incorporated accessibility improvements, modern building systems, full electrification, energy-efficiency upgrades, ADA-compliant restrooms, and a new accessible entrance, all designed to complement the building’s historic character while clearly reflecting contemporary interventions. Throughout design and construction, R. Edwards & Co. coordinated closely with the Town of Danville, the Vermont Agency of Transportation, the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, the Preservation Trust of Vermont, and numerous funding partners to successfully deliver a complex public preservation project. Today, the rehabilitated station serves as a historical society, community gathering place, and trailhead destination, ensuring the long-term preservation of one of Vermont’s most significant surviving rural railroad stations.
