Who we are

R. Edwards & Co. is an award-winning, full-service preservation architecture practice dedicated to helping clients and communities thoughtfully rehabilitate and preserve historic buildings throughout Vermont and northern New England. We specialize in making the process as fun and engaging for our clients as possible, all while maintaining the highest standards of preservation and architectural excellence.

R. Edwards & Co. is named not only for founding principal and architect Ryan Edwards, but for Ryan’s late grandfather, late father, and uncles (Richard, Randy, Ronald, and Russell, respectively) – who have instilled the values of honesty and integrity (with a healthy dose of humor) upon which R. Edwards & Co. operates today. In addition, R. Edwards & Co. is fortunate to work with some of Vermont and northern New England’s best civil, structural, and MEP engineers, historic preservation consultants, and others (“& Co.”), who help to bring so many of our projects to fruition.

Our ethos

We believe in the craft of building.
We value the thoughtful use of natural materials, skilled workmanship, and time-tested building practices, knowing that these are what give historic buildings their strength, longevity, and character.

We believe in fun.
We like to play in the mud, too.  Too many people associate architecture and preservation with pretentious, dry, and stodgy intellectualism.  It isn’t.  It’s about creatively and playfully bringing new life to beautiful old buildings.

We believe in creative collaboration.
We believe that the best architecture comes not from one architect’s vision, but from a carefully coordinated and creative collaboration between the entire project team – the owner included.

We believe in the builder.
We value hands-on experience and craft, recognizing that the success of preservation work rests on the insight, care, and judgment of those who build it.

We believe in empowering the client.
Recognizing that many clients have not worked with an architect before, we believe in educating our clients to help them understand what we as architects do such that the client can extract the most value out of our services in a manner which empowers their engagement in the process and their project.
